BIO

I started my musical life in Somerset at the age of 8 like so many young musicians on the humble recorder. I quickly learned to love playing that little plastic instrument. Even then I would play by ear and transcribe music, so that the rest of my group could play together. I went through a few instruments during my childhood, but my imagination wasn't really captured until I discovered the low end. During secondary school I was taken out of class to see the head of music. He advised me to take up the Tuba as I was the only child big enough to handle the full size instrument that the school owned. I was delighted to sit at the back of a wind band and blast out the bottom notes. It was then only a matter of time before I discovered the school's Bass Guitar and began using every spare lunch break to teach myself how to play it. Later I would receive formal tuition on the instrument as well as double bass. I have been fortunate to have had some very talented teachers and I thank them for getting me to where I am. I was taught from a jazz perspective and while I don't consider myself primarily a jazz musician, I approach most music from this point of view.

I would go on to study at the world renowned Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, a relatively new music college set up by Paul McCartney on the grounds of his childhood school. I really shaped my sound during this period and I became the musician I am today. My primary instrumental teachers during that time were Steve Berry and Tim Pike. I also have been lucky enough to have had master classes from the likes of John Patitucci, Paul Turner and others. I've gone on to live in central London and work in several areas of the industry including musical theatre, jazz, function/cover bands, private lessons, supporting pop artisits and original material on a freelance basis. I spent some time touring with various artists on cruise networks all over the world, including North America, Europe, Australia, South-East Asia and the South Pacific Islands. I've now settled down in Somerset where I primarily teach one-to-one lessons, perform at events in the South-West and conduct online and real life recording sessions.
