In addition to perfoming I am an experienced instrumental teacher who my students find attentive, patient and supportive. I will always move you forward with structured and meaningful exersises that relate to real music. I also guarantee that in each lesson you will make some kind of progress, however small, in your playing. Lessons are delivered in Taunton and I serve the surrounding areas including Bridgwater and Wellington.

With me you will be learning from someone who is taking an active part in the music industry and more importantly is a specialised bass tutor rather than a guitarist who plays bass on the side. I can help you avoid falling into traps by learning bad habits and mistakes that are difficult to unlearn as your playing advances. I have students of all ability levels, from new starters all the way up to players with professional aspirations.

Lesson Content

In my lessons we can look at anything from technical exercises, improvisation to theory, aural skills, transcription, grooving, sight reading or grade exams. We can study jazz standard charts, popular bass lines, walking bass, etc. learned from notation or ear.

The lessons will be focused on becoming a useful and musical player who has a strong sense of time and can apply skills to a variety of situations. I will also advise on how to maintain equipment and give advice about purchases of new instruments, amplifiers or accessories. We can also touch on confidence and issues with stage fright if necessary.

I am a professionally practicing bass player rather than a guitarist who plays bass. It is always better that you get a specialized bass teacher who knows the subtleties of the instrument.

The lesson can be delivered at your own home or at my house in Taunton, postcode TA2 (see map). I also have a studio in Weston-Super-Mare, which can be used. Please contact to work out details.

I am a member of the Musicians Union and insured for public liability. I have also had a recent CRB Check. All ages are welcome, I have taught students from secondary school level all the way up to over 60's.

Please feel free to navigate the rest of my website to learn more about me.

Testimonials

Connor Judge:

"Sean is a great musician with experience, talent and fervor for the bass. If you want to progress as a musician you must understand how to adapt the fretboard to your needs instantaneously! Although such information is widely available, I've never had it explained as clearly as with Sean. He's a sticker about essential technique but designs his lessons to cater to player's individual needs and is thorough in doing so. I highly recommend him as a premier bass specialist.

Peter:

"I have had Double Bass lessons with Sean and found him to be an enthusiastic and informative music teacher. He helped me not just with technique but could also advise on instrument choice and helped set up my Double Bass for me. For anyone wishing to learn bass, I thoroughly recommend Sean Davey."

Tom Marshall:

"I've been playing bass guitar for 30+ years and things have changed, but not me. I needed a hip, kool young dude to drag my ancient techniques into the 21st century. Sean's obvious passion and understanding of the instrument, plus his patience, are helping me get to grips with modern writing and technique."

Mike:

"I had weekly bass guitar instruction from Sean which was only terminated because he received a commission to play on a cruise ship. I found him patient and informative, as well as very knowledgeable in all aspects of the instrument, music and theory. I would recommend him as an affable and competent instructor."
